The Cameroon civil servant retirement age has always been a subject of debate in recent years.
With the life expectancy in Cameroon at 59.08 years as of published data by the WHO in 2019, many have argued that civil servants' previous retirement age should be augmented from 50 years to a more practical age of sixty (60) years and above.
Cameroon Increases Civil Servant Retirement Age to Sixty Years
Following a presidential decision, signed by the president of Cameroon, Mr Paul Biya on December 30, 2020 (copy of communique cited below), the retirement age of workers in Cameroon's public or civil service has been harmonized added to sixty (60) years.
This retirement age increase to 60 years is valid for civil servants in the categories A and B of the Cameroon Civil Service. Moreover, the retirement age for workers in the civil service for categories C and D increased to 55 years.
The decision to add or augment the retirement age is set to take effect from January 1, 2021.
This decision by Cameroon's president has been met with widespread delight especially as workers and Cameroonians are set to get into the new year, leaving aside the challenges imposed by the Covid-19 in 2020.
