Today, the tech giant Google has announced that it is making Google Meet, a video connecting platform for businesses which competes with the likes of Zoom and Skype, available to everyone for free. Before then, it was possible to be part of a Meet call without being a paying user, but you needed a paid G Suite account to host calls.

However, Users will be required to use their Google account to participate in meetings. This isn't going to be a barrier for most people as most do own google accounts anyway. Note that scheduling a free Google Meet call won't commence right away as Google reported that they will open up access to all accounts beginning next week.

It is plausible to think that  Google saw that Zoom had grabbed more consumers with its free version. Without a free version of Meet, Google wasn't able to fully capitalize on the Covid-19 situation, which has made people more and more reliant on video conferencing tools like never before. From September 2020, free account hosting on Google Meet will be limited to 60 minutes. This is still a lot of time compared to Zoom's 40minute duration for Free accounts.

Wanna try out Google Meet?

The good news is that it is freely available from the browser. No app is needed to use the platform.
You can also download the Google Meet App via the PlayStore here.
